Joan F. Mammenga Mazzola, 82 of Loves Park, peacefully passed away with her family by her side Tuesday, September 2, 2014. She was born September 28, 1931 in Chicago, Illinois. The daughter of Fred and Hazel Mammenga. They moved to Oregon, Illinois and settled thereafter in Rockford, Illinois. Graduate of East Rockford High School class of 1949. Married Anthony J. Mazzola, November 1988. Joan was a career travel agent through which she traveled the world through Mexico, Europe, Egypt and India to her and Tony's favorite, cruising through the Mediterranean and Caribbean. She loved new technology, the first in line for any new phone, reading and she and Tony never missed their Friday night date at Lino's. Above all, she loved her family and the times she spent with them during every birthday and holiday. There was no keeping her down through rain, sleet, wind or snow. Her laugh was contagious as was her wonderful sense of humor. Survivors include her daughter, Cynthia K. Moffit. Her beloved sister and best friend, Barabara J. Daley, brother-in-law, Robert J. Daley, grandsons, Brandon and Michael (Katie) Daury, granddaughter, Morgan Cornett, great-granddaughters, Lily-Anne and Ariella and special niece and nephew Lisa Tatosian and Michael (Teri) Hallstrom. Stepchildren David (Kathy) Mazzola, Greensboro, NC, Denise (John) Cornett, Virginia Beach, VA, and numerous nieces and nephews all of whom love her dearly. Predeceased by parents and husband, Anthony.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 10, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at First Lutheran Church 225 S. 3rd street, Rockford, IL with pastor Jane McChesney officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 9, 2014 at Fitzgerald Funeral Home. 1860 S. Mulford Rd. from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.. There will be a visitation from 10:00 a.m. until 10:45 on Wednesday in the church. The family would like to give a special thanks to Swedish American Heart Hospital.
