Jeffrey W. Cowles

Jeffrey W. Cowles, 66, of Machesney Park, IL passed away Wednesday, August 17, 2022. He was born March 26, 1956, in North Tonawanda, NY the son of James R. and Alice (Exner) Cowles. Jeff attended North Tonawanda High School, class of 1974. Jeff proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1974 – 1996. Jeff married Jan (Lawrence) on November 11, 2011. He worked as a Firefighter, Paramedic and Inspector for Rockford Fire Department for 35 years. He also worked for Northern Illinois University as their fire inspector as well as the City of Belvidere as an inspector. Jeff was a talented trombone player and played in 5 different bands. Jeff was an amazing husband, dad, grandpa and friend. He was known for his gentle spirit and willingness to help others. Jeff enjoyed gardening, cooking and a good Scotch. Above all, Jeff loved spending time with his family and friends. He was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, American Legion and City of Rockford Firefighters Local 413. Jeff will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him.
Jeff is survived by his beloved wife, Jan; mother, Alice Cowles; children, Josh Cowles, Jillian (Rick) LaMonica, Brie (Dav) Engle, Laura Cowles and James Cowles; grandchildren, Matthew and Mason LaMonica; siblings, Claire (Larry) Scheeler, Fran (Craig) Ecelbarger, Marti (Brian) Metzger, Jason (Melissa) Cowles; brother-in-law, Jeffrey (Laurie) Lawrence; special cousin, Sue (Mostafa) Meyers- Tanbakuchi, Dave (Mary Kaye) Brune; special friends, Terry (Cynthia) Dingus, Ted and Dina Getty; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Jeff is predeceased by his father, James Cowles; son, Jeffrey Warner Cowles.
Jeff’s family would like to thank Northern Illinois Hospice for their care and compassion. Cremation rites entrusted with Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, December 3, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 3300 Rural St, Rockford, IL 61107. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Jeff’s name to Swedish American Regional Cancer Center, Rockford Fire Department Firemen’s relief Fund or the Rockton VFW.
