Janet Claire Carter

Janet “Jan” Claire (Hammerstrand) Carter, 84, of Rockford passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 27, 2018. She was born on July 31, 1933, in Rockford, daughter of Clarence and Linnea (Lundquist) Hammerstrand.
Janet was a graduate of East High School class of 1951. She attended Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Madison WI, where she received her degree in nursing.
She would later marry the love of her life, Charles Edward Carter, at Zion Lutheran Church, in Rockford, on November 29, 1952, just before he left to serve our country in the United States Army during the Korean War.
As a registered nurse Janet worked in private duty and later for a doctor’s office.
She was a member of several groups including, the Lutheran Church Women, the Sarah Circle, and the 1947 Confirmation Girls Club.
Her hobbies included traveling with her family, riding in the boat while the family water skied, scrapbooking, reading, gardening, and walking the mall with her friends.
Janet taught Sunday school at Shepherd of The Valley for many years and drove for Mobil Meals.
She was happiest when spending time with her family and friends.
She will be truly missed.
Survivors include, her husband, sons, Robert Charles and Thomas William (Steve Mintz) Carter; brother-in-law, Arnold Wallden, and several other loving family and friends.
Predeceased by her parents, and sister-in-law, Mary Lou Wallden.
Memorial Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, March 10 2018, at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, 2715 S. Mulford Rd, Rockford, IL, 61109 with memorial visitation 10 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church.
