James Vollmer

James Arthur Vollmer left this life on September 30, 2017, to be forever with the Lord. Born in Roscoe, Illinois February 14, 1940 to Carl and Betty Vollmer. Graduated from St. Thomas High School in 1958. Attended Loras College in Dubuque, IA, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and became a licensed Certified Public Accountant. On June 16, 1962 he married his high school sweetheart, Mollie Fenelon, with whom he had three loving children. He began his professional career in 1962 as an auditor with Arthur Anderson in Chicago. He returned home to Rockford in the summer of 1969 and began a 23-year career at Colorcraft/Qualex as regional controller. In 1993, he became controller for the Rochelle Travel Plaza, retiring in 2007. Jim was a member of St. Bernadette Parish for over 48 years, during which he was an active member of the Parish Council, a Eucharistic Minister and Usher. Throughout his life, he held a passion for gardening, playing golf and his grandchildren. On numerous occasions, he traveled many miles to watch his grandchildren play in the big game, perform in the school production, or simply to help celebrate birthdays. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.
Survivors include wife of 55 years, Mollie, daughters Katherine (Kurt) Freund, Susan (Patrick) Bannon and son Roger (Meghan) Vollmer. Grandchildren Joshua and Brianna Freund, Sarah, Margaret and Grace Bannon, and Charlotte Vollmer. Sisters Violet (Maurice) DeVlieger, Joanne (Gerald) Greenlee and brother John (Kim) Vollmer. Predeceased by his parents, brothers Carl and Alfred and sister Mary Alice Krull. Special thanks to the OSF medical and hospice staff.
Funeral Mass Friday, October 6, 2017 at 10 a.m. at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 2400 Bell Ave. Visitation Thursday, October 5, 2017 at Fitzgerald Funeral Home and Crematory, Mulford Chapel 1860 S. Mulford Rd. from 5-7 p.m. with a rosary service at 7p.m. Visitation continues on Friday at church in the parish hall from 9 a.m. until time of prayer at 9:45 a.m. In lieu of flowers memorials to St. Bernadette Catholic Church.
