James R. Whitlock, 86, of Cherry Valley, passed away peacefully on November 17, 2021 at his home. He was born October 13, 1935, in Princeton, IL, the son of James E. Whitlock and Dorothy Whitlock. James married the love of his life, Barbara McNinch on October, 26, 1956. James worked as a teacher at Winnebago Middle School, was vice principal at Christian Life and substituted for many years. James was also a talented welder and worked at Liebovich Steel, Arntzen, Comet Fabricating and Welding and various other shops in the area. James remained a welding contractor into his 80’s. James was known for always trying something new and inventing his own contraptions. James was a member of Golden Glove Boxing. He was a generous man with a great sense of humor. He was known for his kindness and his willingness to help people be their best. James enjoyed fishing, ice fishing, cross country skiing, and fossil hunting. He even participated in the dig for the famous Jane the Dinosaur displayed at Burpee Museum. He also enjoyed motorcycling. He was a man of strong faith and was proud to be a member of Gideons International. Most of all, James loved his time spent with his family which he considered his greatest accomplishment. He will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him.
James is survived by his children--Jayme Singh of Cherry Valley, Brent (Ellen) Whitlock of Naperville, daughter-in-law--Sharon Whitlock; grandchildren--Ian, Quin, Evan, Amanda, William, Charity (Jon) Hendrickson, Evangeline, and his great-grandchild--Ryan James; brother, Carroll (Kathy) Whitlock; sister-in-law--Karen (Warren) Mossman; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his soul mate, Barbara Whitlock, parents, and his eldest son, Bradley Whitlock.
Visitation will be held Saturday, November 27, 2021 from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. at Cherry Valley United Methodist Church, 112 Cherry St. Cherry Valley, IL 61016. Funeral Service will be at 1:00 p.m. at the Church. Private burial at Arlington Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family for a cause to be determined.
