James K. Buchanan passed away Monday, October 17, 2022, in Rockford. Born December 7, 1935, in Mishawaka, Indiana, to James D. Buchanan and Mary Helen King Buchanan. Jim joined the United State Airforce serving 4 years active duty and 4 as a reservist. He attended Purdue University majoring in Electrical Engineering. Jim married Judith (Hampton) Buchanan on July 2, 1960. Jim was a gifted engineer working in high voltage construction through most of his career. He came to Rockford from Indianapolis, Indiana to manage B&F Hi-line, a sub-contractor to Commonwealth Edison. Jim worked 8 years at the Byron Nuclear power station during its construction for Hatfield Electric Co., he was the quality engineer who was instrumental in securing the operating permits from the United States Nuclear Regulatory commission. Jim finished his career working for Morris Electric, Co. of Freeport Illinois for over 23 years.
Jim was an avid pilot, he enjoyed sailing, gardening, woodworking, and cooking. He was always learning and always tinkering in the garage
Jim is survived by his loving wife of over 62 years Judy Buchanan, his six children and their spouses; Jim and Julie Buchanan, of Belvidere, Il , Kelly and Tim Sharp, of Rockford, Jim and Katie Marks of Highland Park, Il, Tony Buchanan of Parker, Co., Christine and Tom Dotson of Rockford and Anne Buchanan and Tim Fray of Rockford, His nine grandchildren, Amber (Kyle) Marcussen, Rusty Sharp, Zach (Getchen) Buchanan, Ben Buchanan, (Fiance Alexa Cross) Abigail Buchanan, Hanna Marks (Parker Shorey), Alison Marks, Samantha Doston, (Ryan Carlson), Eliot Dotson. Great Grandchildren, Briar Marcussen, Adeline Buchanan.
His Sisters, Barbara Mennel and Madonna Buchanan and Sister-in-law Mary Michelle Hampton and numerous nieces and nephews. Jim is predeceased by his parents, and in-laws.
The Family would like to thank the staff at Heritage Woods of Rockford and Northern Illinois Hospice for the loving care of Dad.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to Holy Family Parish of Rockford and Northern Illinois Hospice.
