James "Jimmy" D. Brooks, Sr.

June 10, 1940 — May 13, 2022

James Dallas Brooks, born June 10th to James Brooks and Dallas Combs in Virginia. James or “Jimmy” as everyone called him, because of his youthful personality. As a young man the choice was coal mining or military service. Jimmy went in the Army and served in the segregation of schools in Arkansas and served time in Germany when Elvis was there. He came to Rockford after the service to find work in various factory jobs. He then went into the construction field doing residential foundations, cement and also a few years in Florida Keys doing sea walls. Jimmy ended his construction work as a laborer in Local 32 where he retired.

Jimmy worked as hard as the cement he poured. He also liked to have twice as much fun. Jimmy loved to have a few “Buds” with friends at many of the west side bars in Rockford.

His friends would always tease Jimmy that he was so well known they referred to him as “the mayor of the west side.”
Jimmy lasted longer than the many bars that came and went on the west side. There, Jimmy met all the wonderful friends, neighbor’s pool parties, poker and fishing buddies.

Jimmy loved a good deal and was someone they always came to when looking for a used car. He loved old cars and going to car shows with his friends.

Jimmy was one of a kind and will be missed. Jimmy not only made friends he made family.

Jimmy is predeceased by parents; stepdad, Elihue Amburgey, sister, Judy and his long love, Flo. Survivors include son, James Jr.; brother, Ronnie and nieces, nephews and grandchildren.
