James F. Smith

James “Jim” Fredric Smith, (58) loving husband, dad, son, and brother passed away Sunday, August 8, 2021 in Rockford, Illinois. Jim was born January 12, 1963 to Fred and June (Wessman) Smith in Jamaica, Queens, New York. He attended Kings College, NY and LeTourneau University before moving to Rockford Illinois to work at Avemco Aviation Insurance in 1983. Jim married Cheri (Grennan) Smith on August 27, 1994 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Rockford. Jim received his pilot's license before his driver’s license and was able to spend his career in the area of his dreams, aviation.

Jim’s childhood was spent surrounded by his loving family. Losing his father at age 14 brought him, his mom and his brother Gordon even closer together as a family. His greatest memories of childhood were family vacations to New York and time spent with his brother and his cousins. He passed the importance of family on to his children. Jim was happiest watching his children spend time with their cousins at family gatherings, holidays and vacations. He loved his family and loved being on the water. Outer Banks vacations, time on the lake and being at the ocean were what Jim enjoyed. Memories made during their most recent family vacation in July when he was with his favorite people, his children, on the water will be treasured.

Jim is survived by his dedicated wife Cheri; his children who were his pride and joy, Jack (24), Kate (24), James (21) and Meg (16). His best friend and brother Gordon (Danielle) Smith, brothers and sisters in-law, cherished nieces and nephews; God-children Mckenna Smith, Noah Lindquist, and David Bialas, and special friends of the family, Mycah Cornish & Jennifer Matthews. He is preceded in death by his parents; in-laws, Jack & Cheryl Grennan, and beloved brother-in-law, Dave Bialas.

Visitation will be held from 9 am to 10:45 am, Saturday, August 14, 2021 at Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory, Mulford Chapel, 1860 S. Mulford Rd. followed by a funeral service at 11:00 am. A private burial will take place in Rochelle, Il. A memorial has been established for Jim’s children, Jack, Kate, James, and Meg to pursue their dreams, something Jim would have given anything to be a part of.
