James D. Barton

James “Jim” David Barton, 76, of Winnebago, passed away on September 30, 2024. He was born on April 15, 1948, in Freeport, Illinois, the son of John P. and Leila E. (Thomasson) Barton Sr. He graduated from Boylan High School, class of 1966. He married Christa M. Chaney on November 30, 1974, at St. James Catholic Church in Rockford, and she preceded him in death on November 11, 2019. 

Jim had a passion for cars; he loved watching Nascar and Hendrick Motorsports and bought his own 38 Chevy hotrod, and he enjoyed daily cruises. He was an avid fan of the Indianapolis Colts and the New York Yankees. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and the Dominics Club. He enjoyed going out to lunch with his best friend Terry at any family restaurant as long as it served breakfast food. Jim and Christa took pleasure in traveling which included road trips with the family, international trips, and bus day trips. Jim had a big heart for many, especially his grandkids and dogs. He was a trustworthy, friendly, and proud, husband, dad, grandpa, great grandpa, and friend to many. 

He is survived by his children, Brandon and Erin (Hector); grandchildren, Eneida, Everley, and Wrenna; great grandchildren, Elonna; brother, John (Kathy); and 2 best friends since childhood, Terry and Rich. He is predeceased by his parents, John and Leila; wife, Christa; great grandson, Jahseh; and sister-in-law, Marge. 

A Memorial Service will be on Sunday, October 6, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, 3910 N. Rockton Avenue Rockford, Illinois 61103. A visitation will be prior to the service starting at 12:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Paralyzed Veterans of America in James’ name.
