Irene B. Northrup

Irene B. Northrup, 92, of Rockford, IL passed away peacefully at Cherryvale Place Wednesday, April 7, 2021. She was born May 20, 1928 the daughter to Donald J. and Eleanor (Scattergood) Smith. Irene married the love of her life, James M. Northrup on September 29, 1951. Irene was a registered nurse and worked, as well as taught, at Swedish American Hospital. Irene was a loving, positive woman who was very strong in her faith. She was an avid Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears fan. Seeing the Cubs win the World Series was a highlight in her life. She was a longtime member of Alpine Lutheran Church where she played in the hand bell choir. Irene was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She had a love of music, but most of all she loved her family. She will always be in the hearts and minds of those who knew and loved her.
Irene is survived by her children, Dionne (Wes) Dundas, Jim Northrup and Lynn (Chuck) Valentine; grandchildren, Jarron Dundas, Dawn Dundas, James Dundas, Matthew Northrup, Tanya (Chris) Sheckley, Michael (Alyssa Kreighbaum) Valentine; great grandchildren, Connor and Aidan Dundas, Breda and Keller Sheckley and Chase Valentine; brother, David Smith; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents; husband, James M.; great granddaughter, Eliza Sheckley; brother, Donald Scattergood Smith; sisters, Patricia Smith, Barbara Ann Eschman and Phyllis Mumford.
A visitation will be held Monday, April 12, 2021 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Alpine Lutheran Church, 5001 Forest View Ave, Rockford, IL 61108. Memorial service to follow at 11:00 a.m. at the church. Burial at a later date. For those who cannot attend but wish to participate in the service please join via livestream at Alpine Lutheran Church of Rockford Facebook page.
