Hazel Marie Nelson, 91, of Rockford passed away Wednesday, January 9, 2019 and is now reunited with her husband and the love of her life, Burton. Born September 18, 1927, in Rock Grove, the daughter of William and Eva (Shelton) Bell. Hazel married Burton Omar Nelson on May 17, 1951 while he was on leave from the U.S Air Force. Hazel was a gifted artist and painted and sold over 250 acrylic, oil and watercolor paintings, and was a member of the Rockford Art Guild and the Tamaroa Society. When not painting, she could often be found with a book in her hand. Hazel was an avid bowler and was on the senior bowling league at Don Carter Lanes for many years. Hazel also enjoyed spending many Tuesdays with her siblings while reminiscing and sharing many happy childhood stories.
Hazel is survived by her children, Barbara A. (Karl) Mohr and Steven W. Nelson; grandchildren, Jessica M. (David) Throgmartin, Sarah E. (Osric Hitt) Axelson and Daniel B. (Rebecca) Axelson; sister, Dorothy (Richard) Stank; sister-in-law, Georgianne (Thomas) Bell and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her husband, sister, Betty (Glenn) Thompson and brother, Thomas Bell.
The family would like to give thanks OSF Hospice Care, especially Elizabeth, as well as Hazel’s many thoughtful neighbors.
Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 14, 2019 at Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory, Mulford Chapel, 1860 S.
