Gregory "Greg" A. Wurzer

Gregory “Greg” A. Wurzer, 94. Loves Park, passed away Sunday, July 23, 2017, in his home. He was born October 18, 1922, in St. Lucas, IA, the son of Edward and Elizabeth (Kuennen) Wurzer. He served in the Navy during WWII stationed in the Philippines. He married Helene Mihm in St. Lucas, IA on October 21, 1947. Greg was employed by Oliver Tractor and later at Pritzlaff Hardware and then at General Cement (GC Electronics). He then worked at National Lock for 20 years retiring in 1981. He also worked part time at Fitzgerald Funeral Home for 20 years as a service assistant. Greg attended Loras College for 2 years and the American Institute of Des Moines where he received his degree in accounting. He was a graduate of the Dale Carnegie School and was an instructor. He was a member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church where he ushered for many years. He was a 3rd degree member of Knights of Columbus Muldoon Council 470, and a 4th degree member of the General Assembly 190, was a member of the Honor Guard since 1973,was a past Commander of the Knights of Columbus for several years, and was the KC scholarship chairman at Boylan High School. He was a member of the Navy Club, the VFW, was in charge of St. Mary’s food pantry for 15 years and the chairman for 13 food pantries in the Rockford area. Greg was also nominated for Super Senior of the Year in 1993, and served for 9 years on the Catholic Charities board.
Survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Helene; his son, James (Jan Young) Wurzer, his sisters, Emma McGrath and Elaine (Maurice) Collins; his brothers, Adrian, Edward (Norma), and Kenneth (Elaine) Wurzer; his sister-in-law, Betty Wurzer; several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his sisters, Theresa Kuehner, Antonia Kipp and Jeanne Cole; and his brothers, Clement (Barb), Florian (Pat) and Edgar.
Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 A.M., on Thursday, July 27, 2018, at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 2400 Bell Av. Burial at a later date. Visitation will be held from 4:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday, July 26, 2017, at Fitzgerald Funeral Home and Crematory, Riverside Chapel, 3910 N. Rockton Av with the Rosary recited at 7:00 P.M. and a visitation from 10:00 A.M. until 10:45 A.M. on Thursday at the church. Share online condolences at www.fitzgeraldfh.com.
