Gordon M. Sherman

Gordon M. Sherman, 86, of Rockford, passed away September 10, 2017 in his home. Born October 10, 1930, in Rockford, the son of Roger & Hazel (Axelson) Sherman. Graduated from Rockford East High School, class of 1948. He served in the United States Marine Corps. Married Barbara Larson in Rockford on September 28, 1957. Gordy worked for Sjostrom & Sons Inc., as a heavy equipment operator for over 36 years, retiring in 1992. Both Barb and Gordy bred and raised black labs. He enjoyed fishing, trips to their lake home in Wisconsin, riding around on his Gator, his “Breakfast Friends” at the Cherry Valley Café, enjoying time with his “North Woods” friends, but most of all spending time with his family.
Gordy was known for his sense of humor, spending time in his garage, and helping friends, family, and neighbors with projects.
Survivors include his beloved wife Barb, children Rick Sherman and Kathy (Ron) Schoenrock; grandchildren Katie West, Mary and Matthew Sherman, Chris (Sara) Olson, Megan Olson and Ben (Jessica) Westerman; several great grandchildren. Predeceased by parents, son Doug; brother Roger.
Service will be 2 p.m. Friday, September 15, 2017 at Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory, 1860 S. Mulford Rd., Rockford with the Rev. Scott Nesse officiating. Visitation from 1 p.m. until time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Semper Fi Fund or Northern Illinois Hospice.
