George E. Mathis

George E. Mathis, 79, of Rockford, IL passed away after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease on March 22, 2021. He was born on May 1, 1941 in Winona, MN to George and Alvina (Fahrendholz) Mathis. George met the love of his life, Doris, through a blind date in 1960. They married on May 4, 1963 in Winona, MN. He worked for the UAW 1268 for over 30 years and was a member of the American Legion. George enjoyed fishing, traveling, dancing, going to the casino’s, and coaching baseball. He was a NASCAR fan and an avid Minnesota Viking fan. George will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

George is survived by his wife of 57 years, Doris; his daughter, Cindy (Bruce) Sanders; his sons, George (fiancé, Cindy Keating) Mathis and Scott (Renee) Mathis; his grandchildren, Erica (Michael) Spitzer, Tristan Mathis, Charles (Abigail Rockwood) Zimmer, Cody Mathis and Hope Mathis; his great grandson, Aiden Spitzer; his sisters in-law, Darlene Fannery and Wanda (Hans) Masshardt; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Rebecca Mathis, his brother in-law, DeWayne Fannery; and his nephew, Eric Armstrong.

Doris would like to extend a special thank you to her family, Northern Illinois Hospice, and the staff at Swedish American Hospital for all of their compassion and care during this time.
