Floyd Herbig

June 28, 1929 — July 10, 2016

Floyd M. Herbig, died July 11, 2016 at home. Born February 19, 1929 to Ray and Urilla (Seibert) Herbig in rural Pecatonica, Illinois. Moving to Seward in 1938, Floyd attended Beuth, Seward and Pecatonica schools. Graduate of Pecatonica High School in 1946. A combat veteran of the Korean War, Floyd served with the 7th Infantry Regiment 3rd Infantry Division in 1951 and 1952. Returning home, Floyd married his longtime love, Dolores Statdfield on May 2, 1953 at Centennial Methodist Church in Rockford. Member of the United States Army Reserve Company C, 863rd Engineer Battalion, Rockford from 1956 to 1983, retiring as First Sergeant. Longtime member of the Winnebago County Farm Bureau. Member of Local 150 International Union of Operating Engineers from 1960 to 1981. Employed by North Park Public Water District from 1983 to 1998. Member of VFW Post 9759, Loves Park and lifetime member of the Greater Rockford Korean War Veterans Association, Chapter 272. It was Floyd’s wish, along with all the members of this chapter, to build a memorial to honor the men from Boone, Ogle and Winnebago Counties who gave their lives during the Korean War. This memorial stands today in the Arthur Anderson Peace Park in Loves Park. Floyd’s love of family was first and foremost the mainstay in his life. Floyd enjoyed his garden, always planting too many tomatoes. Floyd loved the family cabin on Lake Nokomis near Tomahawk, Wisconsin, where for nearly 60 years, family and friends came to enjoy the beauty of the Northwoods. Floyd had a special place in his heart for steam locomotives and World War II fighter planes, such as the P51 Mustang, also used in Korea. His pride in his fellow retirees from Company C 863rd Engineer Battalion will be everlasting.
Survived by son, Matthew (Janella) Herbig of Rockford, sister, Alice Chandler of Sterling as well as several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his wife, Dolores, Brothers, Laverne and Larry Herbig and sister, Evelyn Dahl and his parents.
