Evelyn M. Serdar, 83, of Rockford, passed away on Sunday, October 20, 2013. She was born in Hudson, IL on December 4, 1929; the daughter of Louis and Mae (McKinney) Schneider. She was later adopted by aunt and uncle, Herman and Inez (McKinney) Schneider. Evelyn graduated from Normal Community High School in 1947. She went on to further her education and graduated with her Bachelor's degree from Illinois State Normal University in 1954. Evelyn married John L. Serdar on November 24, 1955. They were married nearly 25 years until John preceded her in death in 1979. She taught home economics at Roanoke-Benson and Farmington High Schools and spent several years as a substitute teacher at Farmington School District. Evelyn relocated to Rockford in 1990 and became an active member of Concordia Evangelical Lutheran Church, where she served as a member of the Altar Guild and especially enjoyed sewing with the senior groups. She continued working part time for Joanne Fabrics and the Rockford YMCA until officially retiring in 2002. Evelyn enjoyed cross stitching and making quilts and loved traveling to visit her family.
Evelyn is lovingly survived by her children, David (Rev. Pamela) Serdar, of Shorewood, MN, John (Laura) Serdar, of La Canada, CA, Kenneth (Cheryl) Serdar, of Spring,TX, Jayne (Frank) Nauman, of Loves Park, IL and Tom (Cynthia) Serdar, of Dallas, TX; 9 grandchildren, Adam and Brenna Serdar, Jarrick, Kelleigh and Keagan Serdar and Jessica, Brianne and Jonathan Nauman and Eric Serdar; sister, Lois Guth, of Evansville, WI; numerous nieces and nephews, caregiver Linda King. Predeceased by her parents; husband, John; sisters, LaVerne Park and Irene Broy.
Funeral Service at 11:00 AM on Friday, October 25, 2013 in Concordia Lutheran Church, 7424 North Second St, Machesney Park, Reverend David Mumm officiating. Visitation from 10:00 AM until the time of service. Burial will be at 1:00 PM on Saturday, October 26, 2013 in Hudson East Cemetery, Hudson, IL. Memorial donations may be made to American Diabetes Association, American Cancer Society or Concordia Lutheran Church. Arrangements completed by Fitzgerald Funeral Home.
