Elizabeth Anne "Betty" Burns

Elizabeth Anne "Betty" Burns, Lifetime resident of Rockford died Saturday, September 21, 2013 at the Siena on Brendenwood. Born December 17, 1914 in Pecatonica, IL the daughter of Timothy P. and Margaret (Sheahan) Burns. Betty graduated in 1931 from Muldoon High School in Rockford, attended Rosary College in River Forest, IL and graduated from Northern Illinois University in 1947 with a Bachelor of Education Degree. She then graduated from the University of Denver with a Masters of Librarianship Degree. She was a teacher and a school librarian in Rockford and Winnebago County schools for 49 years, retiring in 1979. She spent 1 year in Germany in 1952 and another year in Japan in 1954 teaching U.S. military personnel's children.
Her family consist of, Bob (d.) and Alice Burns, John and Jean (d.) Burns, Mary Anne and Don (d.) Doherty, Catherine and Fred (d.)Harrison, James Burns, Margaret Brod, David Burns, Sharon Martin, Thomas Burns, Patricia and Howard Lenox, Carol Prescott, Linda and Warren Layng, Gerald and Debra Burns; many great and great-great nieces and nephews and cousins. Betty was also preceded in death by her parents, a special aunt Elizabeth Sheahan; brothers, William, Phillip, Tobias, Clement, Allyn, T. Joseph and nephew William J. Burns.
The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of Betty's caregivers for the compassionate care they gave her.
Funeral Mass Saturday, September 28, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 2400 Bell Ave. Interment will be held in the afternoon on Saturday at St. Mary/ St. James Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday, September 27 at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel 3910 N. Rockton Ave. from 5-7 p.m. and will continue in the parish hall at St. Bernadette's from 9:30 until time of prayer at 10:15 a.m. In lieu of flowers make memorials to: St. Peter's Assist A Student Fund, 1243 N. Church St. Rockford, IL 61103. Elizabeth's funeral arrangements were entrusted to Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel.
