Edward J. Monahan

Edward John Monahan, Jr. born in Davis Junction on April 24, 1920 to Mary Finn and Edward John Monahan, Sr., passed from this life in peace in his home on May 23, 2014. Joined the United States Army in 1942 serving 4 ½ years with 2 ½ years in South Pacific including New Guinea and South Philippines liberations. He was wounded in action and awarded two purple hearts and returned to duty. Employed by Illinois Bell Telephone for 40 years. Married June Malloy on April 21, 1949 and together they raised 5 beautiful children. He was proud of his Irish heritage and the United States of America. A devout Catholic and founding member of St. Bernadette Church. Ed enjoyed gardening, fishing, sports and especially his children and grandchildren. Predeceased by his sister, Rosemary (William) Cassel and twin sister, Eileen Monahan. Special thanks to longtime friend Darrel Carlson, Dr. William Schultz, the Swedish American Staff, Heartland Hospice and special care giver Lori Harris.
Survived by June Malloy, children; Patricia (Vern) Eldridge, Timothy Monahan, Peggy (Thomas) Sala, Maureen (Keith) Wilson and Molly (Dan) Daugherty; 9 grandchildren; Ryan, Shawn (Megan) and Eilise Sala; Kerensa, Christopher and Caleb Wilson, Chelsea Eldridge and Connor and Shannon Daugherty and great-granddaughters, Sofia and Petra Sala.
Funeral Mass Saturday, May 31, 2014 at 10 a.m. at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 2400 Bell Ave with visitation in the Parish Hall from 9 a.m. until time of prayer at 9:45 a.m. Interment will be held in Calvary Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials in his name to: St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
