Edward H. Sprigler, 71, Rockford, died on Saturday, December 7. 2013 in Rockford Memorial Hospital. Born October 3, 1942 in Deadwood, SD, son of Alfred H; and Lucy Mae (McDonnell) Sprigler. Married Elizabeth A. Kappeler in Spearfish, SD on October 5, 1963. He was an active member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church for over forty years, where he was involved in many volunteer activities. He was also a Eucharistic Minister to Amberwood Nursing Home. Retired from Atwood Vacuum Machine in 1986 after 20 years of employment. Following retirement, he achieved a life-time goal by becoming a successful business owner. Ed's Food Mart in Sharon, WI became a Sprigler family business where many of the family members worked together during the years. Ed and Liz became an integral part of the Sharon community. They retired and sold the store in 2006. Ed was a life long learner while constantly looking to broaden his horizons. He and Liz traveled the world while serving to make the world a better place. They are funding the education of nursing students in Uttar Pradesh, India as well as ongoing financial support of the Chepang School in Chitwan, Nepal. He was a beekeeper for many years and an enthusiastic woodcrafter. Truly best friends, Ed and Liz played several games of cribbage every day. Ed was a very faith filled man whose personal faith was the core of his very being. God, family and community were always his most important priorities. The family wishes to thank Dr. V. Racanelli, the emergency room and ICU staff at Rockford Memorial Hospital for their professional and compassionate care.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Elizabeth; children, Antoinette (Matt) Bortoli, Christopher (Dawn Hudson) Sprigler and Edward (Pamela) Sprigler; grandchildren, Nicholas (Judy), Lauren, Mark, Stuart, Erika, Peter, Abby and Patrick; great-grandsons, Zairee and Nicholas; siblings, James (Martha) Sprigler, Joseph (Joan) Sprigler, Thomas (Carol) Sprigler, Father William Sprigler and numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents and his brother, Leo Sprigler.
Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Friday, December 13, 2013 at St. Bernadette Catholic Church with his brother, Rev. William Sprigler officiating. Burial at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, December 12th, 2013 at Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory, Riverside Chapel, 3910 N. Rockton Ave. with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m.Visitation also from 9-9:45 a.m. on Friday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family for distribution to the Chepang School in Chitwan, Nepal and other charities close to Ed's heart.
