Dr. Donald F. Nelson, 87, of Rockford passed away Monday, March 6, 2017 at Anam Glen. Born July 17, 1929, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the son of Alfred and Esther (Helwig) Nelson. Donald was a veteran serving in the United States Army. He was a graduate of the University of Minnesota, where he was a Phi Beta Kappa. Donald was a Linguistics and German History Professor at Ohio State, Michigan State and Bowling Green State University. He met his wife, Alice Calverley in grade school and as their paths crossed again 50 plus years later, they married on June 25, 2005. Donald was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church and always enjoyed meeting with the “Breakfast Club.” He was a lifelong learner with a curious mind. Donald enjoyed conversations and of course, a good debate. He played the piano and had a passion for Classical music. He always enjoyed spending time with his granddaughters.
Survived by his wife, Alice; son, Phillip (Gail) Nelson of Columbus, Ohio; daughter, Michelle (Greg) Rogers of Lewis Center, Ohio; granddaughters, Madeline and Emily. Predeceased by his parents and brother, Robert Nelson.
