Donald R. Bunk

Donald Raymond Bunk, 91, of Monroe Center, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, April 17, 2023.

Donald was born in Chicago, IL on March 8, 1932, son of Raymond and Lillian (Beskow) Bunk Sr. He attended St. Thomas and graduated from Rockford East High School. Donald married Darlene Thomas on February 9, 1952, and later married Helen Van Lanningham on December 3, 1988. He worked as an auto mechanic and was a proud business owner of Grindstone Tool as a precision tool maker for many years. Donald was a long time member of St. Edward Catholic Church where he was an alter boy during his younger years. He enjoyed taking trips up north to the family cabin on Grindstone Lake in Hayward, WI for 20 years and later the Chippewa flowage for 10 years. Donald loved fishing, woodworking, gardening and was an avid reader. He also enjoyed driving his golf cart around the family property. Having been a part of our everyday lives, his passing creates a void that will never be filled.

Surviving relatives include his sister, Lori (David) Walter, his children; Chris (Pat) Montgomery, Steve (Cindy) Bunk, Tom (Brenda) Bunk, Laura (Tom) Maxwell and stepson, Rod (Vonne) Van Lanningham; grandchildren, Jaime (Jay) Williams, Jeff (Amber) Montgomery, Jay (Trish) Montgomery, Alex (Marissa) Bunk, Elle (Jon) Koll, Andy (Jen) Bunk, Ian Bunk, Keegan (Emily) Maxwell, Schae (Devin) Armstrong, Dolan (Allie) Maxwell and Nevin (Rachel) Maxwell; 16 great-grandchildren; many special nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Don is predeceased by his parents, Raymond and Lillian; mother-in-law, Clara Thomas; spouses, Darlene and Helen; brothers, Raymond Jr. and Walter Bunk and sister Mary Vacarello.

On Saturday April 22, 2023 a visitation will be held at 11:00 AM followed by a service at 12:30 PM. located at Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory, 3910 N. Rockton Ave. Rockford, IL 61103. Final resting place will conclude in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Machesney Park, IL.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Donald's name to the Bunk family to be divided among his many charities.
