Domenica Meiga Scoma, 90, of Rockford passed away Thursday, June 11, 2009 in Rockford Memorial Hospital. Born September 17, 1918 in Donaldsonville, LA the daughter of Antonio and Angelina (Gagliano) Barcelona. She graduated from Donaldsonville High School in 1935. After graduation, she worked at Block Bros. Clothing Store as a clerk, window dresser and made alterations. Meiga moved to Rockford in 1941 and married John Scoma in St. Anthony of Padua Church on September 19, 1943. He predeceased her in 2004. Meiga worked for Illinois Bell as a local and long distance operator for 10 years. She retired in 1951 when her son John F. was born. She was a member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church. Meiga loved flowers. She planted 400 annuals each year all around her yard. She also enjoyed cooking, baking and sewing, but most of all she was devoted to her family and helped care for them when needed. Meiga is survived by her loving and caring son John Franklin Scoma, three loving sisters Rosemary Chauvin, Joanne Pollet and Jacqueline (Michael) Sislock. Sister-in-law Sheila Barcelona, special nieces Beverly Donovan, Diane Abramson, Danielle Sadat-Sharifi, Rexanne Becnel, Renee Chauvin, Sharon Wall, Linda Barcelona and Terri Creamer. Special nephews Kenneth Bruscia, Steven Barcelona, Stephen Sislock, James Donovan, Chuck Abramson, Matt Chauvin, M.J. Barcelona, Mark Barcelona, James Barcelona, L.J. Pollet and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. She is predeceased by her parents, husband, sister Lena Bruscia and brothers Vincent Charles, Matthew Joseph, Tony Victor and Al Louis Barcelona. Funeral Mass will be Monday, June 15, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Bernadette Catholic Church with the Rev. Matthew T. Rudden officiating. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, June 14, 2009 in Fitzgerald Funeral Home amp; Crematory, Riverside Chapel, 3910 N. Rockton Ave., Rockford, IL 61103 with a Rosary to be recited at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue Monday from 9:00 a.m. until time of Mass in the church.
