Dennis J. Hiemenz

Dennis J. Hiemenz of Rockford passed away Tuesday, December 27, 2016 at the age of 73. He was born May 4, 1943 in Aurora, IL, the son of John and Esther Hiemenz. He graduated from Marmion Academy. He received his BA from Loras College in English, Master’s Degree in Education and Administrative Degree from NIU. He married Mary Lou Zimmer in Dubuque, Iowa on August 19, 1967. Dennis worked for Boylan High School for 48 years as both a teacher and administrator. He will be remembered for his dedication to and his encouragement of colleagues and students. Dennis taught English for 26 years and was Assistant Principal of Academic Affairs for 22 years. He treasured time with his family at home and on many road trips to natural, historical and magical destinations. He enjoyed reading, fishing, collecting, gardening and creating memories with his grandchildren. He was also an artist with many talents ranging from wood turning to building garden sculptures. He was a member of St. Bridget Church.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Mary Lou; daughters, Christine (Paul) Schaver of Kenosha, WI, Tanja (David) Mead of St. Louis, MO and Stephanie (Brian) McGuire of Rockton, IL; grandchildren, Colin, Lucas, Allison, Shelby, Tabitha, Zoey and Ireland; sister, Joyce (Lee) Ferree of Urbandale, IA. Predeceased by his parents.
Memorial Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday January 2, 2017 at St. Bridget Church, 600 Clifford Ave, Loves Park, IL. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until 10:45 in the church prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to Boylan High School Educational Assistance Program or Rockford Rescue Mission. Arrangements completed by Fitzgerald Funeral Home Mulford Chapel.
