David A. Thompson, 77, passed away Thursday, May 23, 2024, at his home in Rockford, IL. He was born March 27, 1947, in Rockford, IL to Allen and Florence (Williamson) Thompson. He met the love of his life, Candace, here in Rockford and they were married soon after on June 15, 1968. They welcomed two children into the world, Beth Anne, and Craig, whom he was a devoted father to. David accomplished many things in this life and was decorated with many awards, such as the Crusader Clinic “Spirit of Caring” Award, Rockford Rotary “Service Above Self”, and the Janet Wattles Distinguished/Exemplary Service Award. He was an advocate for helping those who needed it the most. Director of several foundations including the Winnebago Blind Center, Rosecrance Foundation, Rockford Local Development Corporation Board, and the Janet Wattles Center for Mental Health. David also spent his time volunteering and acting as president of multiple committees such as the Discovery Center, OSF St. Anthony Hospital Advisory board, vice president of fund development of the Golden Apple Foundation, Northern IL Center for Nonprofit Excellence, and the Community Foundation of Northern IL Trustee and Executive Committee. On top of managing all the above, David dedicated his career to the banking industry, working as the senior vice president of Alpine Bank for 16 years, being in Rockford area banks for over 40 years. Above all, David will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather to his family.
David is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Candace; children, Beth Anne (Timothy) Dulgar, Craig (Amy) Thompson; grandchildren, Gabe Thompson, Abby Thompson; sister, Ann Marie (Mike) Domico; brothers James Christopher Thompson, and Charles Anthony (Pam) Thompson. He is predeceased by his parents and sisters, Julie Jessup, and Mary Beth Allen.
The family would like to thank the staff at OSF Hospice, especially Wendy, Gina, Chris, and Brittany, for the care they gave to David.
A memorial service will take place on Sunday, June 2, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. at Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory, Mulford Chapel, 1860 S. Mulford Road, Rockford, IL, 61108.
