David Scott Matheson, a beloved member of the Rockford, Illinois community, passed away unexpectedly on March 24, 2025, at the age of 55. Born on May 25, 1969, in Rockford, David remained a lifelong resident of the city he cherished and explored as an adventurous child and adult.
David was a man of gentle spirit and unwavering loyalty, known to many as the "Gentle Giant" and the "Tall Maintenance Guy" for his towering presence and caring nature. His life was a testament to his belief in Christianity, a faith that guided him throughout his journey.
For 30 years, David dedicated himself to his work at Swedish American Hospital, where he was not only a valued employee but also a cherished friend to colleagues and staff alike. His commitment and hard work left a lasting impact on the hospital community and served as an inspiration to those around him. His presence and vast knowledge will be greatly missed.
David's greatest pride and joy were his family. He is survived by his loving wife, Tracy Matheson (Lazzaro), and their two daughters, Nicole (Levi) Larson and Jaclyn Matheson, who were the center of his world. His father, James Matheson, and his brother, James Jr. “Fred” (Wendy) Matheson, also survive him. He was predeceased by his mother, Catherine Matheson, whose memory he held dear.
Outside of his family, David found joy in the outdoors and in his “safe space”, the barn. He loved using his own two hands, no project ever being too daunting. His family is confident that the first thing he did when he reached heaven was cut down trees and build a cabin.
In remembering David, we are reminded of his youthful spirit and the warmth he brought to those around him. His legacy of love and integrity lives on in his children, as reflected in the words of Proverbs 20:7: "The righteous man walks in his integrity; his children are blessed after him."
David Scott Matheson will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His life was a blessing, and his memory will continue to inspire those he leaves behind.
