David Bruce Humphrey, Sr, 75, passed away on February 5, 2024, after a courageous battle with melanoma. He was born on February 12, 1948, to Patricia (McNinch) and Edwin Humphrey in Sterling, IL. David was the oldest of 4 children and a proud Vietnam Veteran. He served as an aircraft mechanic in the Air Force and then worked in manufacturing at Pactiv and the Ball Corporation.
David retired to Norfork, Arkansas where he spent his time playing Santa, fishing, quilting, and working as a volunteer firefighter. He had many other unique hobbies, but found a second family with the ladies of Sew Unique in Mountain Home, AR. David spent many hours with them quilting, making memorable items he passed to his family, and others he sold at craft fairs.
David is survived by his daughter and son-in-law - Katrin and Dustin Scherbarth, grandchildren Nathen Humphrey and Holden Johnson, son - David Humphrey, Jr. (Tania Humphrey) and grandchildren Nia and Zoe Humphrey, Sister - Merrie Zakaris, Brother - Bruce & Janet Humphrey, Brother - Pat & Jean Humphrey, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Gwen and parents Patricia and Edwin Humphrey.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory, 3910 N. Rockton Ave, Rockford, IL, 61103 on March 22, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Madison VA Hospital, 2500 Overlook Terrace, Madison, WI, 53705.
