David A. Lewandowski, 71, Rockford, formerly of Freeport, passed away on Sunday, December 4, 2016, at SwedishAmerican Hospital following a lengthy illness. He was born on December 19, 1944, in Joliet, the son of Anthony and Ann (Katz) Lewandowski, Sr. David attended school at Joliet Catholic High School in Joliet and Warren High School in Warren graduating in 1963. During his high school years he was an elite wrestler and competed at state level wrestling tournaments. He then attended Loras College, Dubuque, IA, and the University of Wisconsin, Platteville, WI studying civil engineering. During his professional career he managed major interstate construction projects in the Lakeland and Winter Haven, FL area, and the Chicagoland area, retiring in 2010.
David married Diane Russell and they had two sons. He coached his sons in little league baseball when they lived in Illinois and later in Florida. He also was involved with his sons in Cub Scouts. David was an avid Chicago Bears and Cubs Fan. David enjoyed meeting people, had an engaging personality, and loved spending time with his family. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. David is now at peace with God and has joined his family in heaven.
David is survived by his two sons, Brian Lewandowski of Lakeland, FL, and Mark Lewandowski of South Lake, TX, four grandchildren; Kaley, Megan, Logan, and Sydney Lewandowski; sisters, Marcia (Joseph) Bardi of Fresno, CA, and Diane (Allan) Drew of Freeport; sister-in-law, Sue Lewandowski of Rockford; brother, John Lewandowski, Bettendorf, IA; nieces, Melody Henson, Allison (David) Collins, and Rebecca (Dan) Thompson; nephews, Christopher Bardi, Dan Lewandowski, Tim (Elissa) Lewandowski, and Quinn Henson, and numerous cousins. David is predeceased by his parents, and brothers, Anthony “Tony” and Leonard Lewandowski. Special thanks to all who cared for David throughout his illness.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, December 9, 2016, at Fitzgerald Funeral Home and Crematory, Mulford Chapel, 1860 S. Mulford Rd. Rockford with Fr. John Evans officiating. Burial in Arlington Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. until time of service at the funeral home.
