Danny P. Carter, 56, Rockford, died at 6:05 pm. Friday, November 13, 2009 at home. Born February 27, 1953 in Kankakee, IL., son of Alvin and Betty Longtin Carter. Graduated from Bishop McNamara High School in Kankakee. He earned both his undergraduate degree in special education and his masters degree in administration from Northern Illinois University. He was a teacher in the Rockford School District, having taught at Guilford Center, East High School, Jefferson High School and Carlson Elementary School. Prior to being a principal in the school district he was a special education supervisor and then was the principal at Muhl Center, New Milford, Nashold and RSTA schools. In 1998 he became principal of Greenwood Elementary School in Woodstock and since 2007 until his retirement in 2009 he was the principal at Prairiewood Elementary School there. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church, Rockford, where he had been very active in previous years. He was a long time avid Bears fan. Danny appreciated music and enjoyed singing and performing for his students. He was a well loved and respected man who was admired by many.
Survivors include his 3 loving sons, Christopher Carter, Chicago, Andrew (Susanna) Carter and Stephen Carter, Rockford; granddaughter, Carly Carter; the 2 people that have always supported and loved him, Colleen Kelly Carter ONeill and Gerald Abb; father Alvin (Irene) Carter, Bourbonnais; brothers, Thomas Michael (Susan) Carter, San Antonio, TX, John Allen (Dorothy) Carter, Vernon Hills and Matthew Joseph Carter, Wheeling; nieces and a nephew; step-sister, Judy DeMent, step-brother, Jay DeMent and his special canine pal, Thor. Predeceased by his mother, Betty Carter and his brother, Patrick James Carter.
A Mass of Ressurection will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 17, 2009 in St. James Catholic Church with Rev. David E. Beauvais officiating. Burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Monday in Fitzgerald Funeral Home amp; Crematory, Mulford Chapel, 1860 S. Mulford Rd. with a Christian Wake Service to be held at 7:30 p.m. Visitation also from 9:30 a.m. until 10:15 a.m. at the church on Tuesday. Memorials may be made to the family for the Danny P. Carter Memorial Fund, c/o Alpine Bank, 1700 N. Alpine Rd. Rockford, IL. 61107. Condolences and memories may be shared at www.fitzgeraldfh.com.
