Daniel A. Verstynen, 73, loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle and dear friend, died on Thursday, May 31, 2007 in his home while in the loving care of his family. A lifelong resident of Rockford, Daniel was born January 11, 1934, to Joseph Cornelius and Hazel Mary (Almond) Verstynen. Daniel graduated from West High School and served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955. He received his bachelors degree in Accounting from Northern Illinois University in 1959. Daniel was a talented CPA who began his own business, Verstynen & Co., in 1965. He worked downtown in the Talcott Building for over 40 years, enjoying the loyalty and friendship of many clients just as long. He was widely known by many for his kindness, generosity and humor. Daniel was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church, an avid reader and he enjoyed cooking, gardening and listening to public radio. His greatest pleasure though, was being a loving father to his 3 wonderful children, Emily S. (Ryan) Mohney, Joseph C. and Sarah E. and grandfather to his granddaughter Alyssa Danielle Mohney. Additional survivors include his brother, Clinton (Janet) Verstynen; sister, Margaret Lofgren; many loved nieces and nephews and step-daughter, Julie (Mark) Gavic and her 4 children. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Alice Peper, and brother, Charles Verstynen. Memorial service to be held on Tuesday, June 5, 2007 at 1 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 4848 Turner, Rockford 61107. Visitation will be held on Monday, June 4 from 4-8 p.m. at Fitzgerald Funeral Home and Crematory, Mulford Chapel, 1860 S. Mulford Rd. In lieu of flowers please make memorials to the family for a fund to be established at a later date.
