Charles Luther Spray

November 18, 1942 — March 29, 2021

Charles Luther Spray, 78, of Rockford passed away March 29, 2021, after a short illness. Charles was born in Biggers, Arkansas, on November 18, 1942, son of Luther and Beatrice Spray. Charles and his family moved to Rockford when he was a child. Charles married the love of his life, Patsy (Hollaway) Spray, on January 27, 1962.

Charles was a kind man with never a harsh word. He was always willing to help others anytime if he could. Charles loved cars, especially racing at Byron Dragway when he was a young adult. He took up art and painting, which he found enjoyable. He loved to create and make wood furniture pieces for his wife, and his children. He loved to work in his yard, and garden. He planted a variety of vegetables in his garden. When the bounty from the garden was too big, his family always reaped the rewards. Charles was a family man, who enjoyed vacations with the children when they were young, and as adults. Working hard throughout his life, Charles had many jobs. Charles worked for Greenlee, Aqua Aerobic Systems, Publishers Equipment Company, and then retired from Nissan Forklift in Marengo. After retirement, Charles took-up quilting with his wife, which he was very talented at.

Charles and Patsy had four children. Charles is survived by daughter, Yvette (Erik) Swenson of Loves Park, son, Aaron (Kelli) Spray of Byron, and daughter, Erica (Jason) Miller of Davis Junction. Grandchildren Devin (Morgan) Swenson of Chicago, Drew Swenson of Loves Park, Liam Spray and Cora Spray of Byron. Great grandson, Elias Swenson of Chicago. Charles is also survived by his brother, Carl (Connie) Spray Sr. of Winnebago, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Charles is predeceased by his wife, Patsy, his daughter, Michele Kelly, his parents, Luther and Beatrice, and sisters Melba Mackey and Betty Davis.

There will be a private gathering for the immediate family. In lieu of flowers, condolences are welcomed. Arrangements are being handled by Fitzgerald Funeral Home and Crematory, 1860 S. Mulford Road Rockford, Illinois.
