Charles E Carter

Charles Edward (Charlie) Carter was born on November 6, 1932 in Rockford, Illinois to Edward and Alice (Carlson) Carter. He was honored for delivering the Morning Star and Register Republic newspapers with a trip to New York City at the age of 13 years old. He graduated from East High School in 1950 and married Janet Claire Hammerstrand on November 29, 1952 in Zion Lutheran Church in Rockford, where they were confirmed and later served on the church council. He served in the United States Army for two years during the Korean War. He began working for Ingersoll Milling Machine Company, while continuing studies at Rockford College during evenings. While at Ingersoll, he traveled throughout the United States, France, England, Germany, Sweden, China, Poland, Russia, and Japan for the company. He retired from Ingersoll in 1997 after 43 years and then continued on as a consultant for 4 more years. He served on the board at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church after joining in 1968, and continued as an usher through the years. Charlie was a man of diverse interests. In his spare time he enjoyed adding on rooms a covered patio, and attached garage to our homes, and building bookshelves and cabinets in many of the rooms. He could always figure out how to build or repair anything needed. Charlie enjoyed driving his boat to pull his sons on water skies through the years, and going fishing in Canada with his sons, relatives, and friends. In the 1970s, Charlie was known as the “Three year Tour Man and Van Driver of the Years” for the Kantorei Singing Boys of Rockford, and he was President of the choir in 1979-1980. He was an avid golfer both in Rockford and in Florida during the winter months. He was an excellent cook and served many unique meals around his pool in Rockford and while vacationing in Florida. During his retirement, he enjoyed many years of traveling to islands in the Caribbean, Mexico, and later in Florida with many friends. He will be sadly missed by those whose lives he touched. Charlie was a dedicated family man leaving behind; his two sons, Robert Charles Carter and Thomas William Carter (Steve Mintz); and many nephews, niece, cousins, and many friends. Preceding him in death were his parents; Edward and Alice Carter; Wife, Janet Carter; and sisters, Mary Lou and Arny Wallden.
