Charles “Chuck” Anderson Powell, Jr., 91. Rockford, passed away Sunday, January 1, 2017, in his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born September 2, 1925, in Princeton, the son of Charles Anderson and Gladys (Freeburg) Powell, Sr. Chuck served in the Navy during WWII. He married Shirley Mae Bartman in Rockford on November 16, 1946. She passed away in Rockford on March 17, 2013. Chuck owned and operated the Rockford Mattress Company on 7th Street with his brother, Ralph, until his retirement. He was an avid golfer and was very proud of the hole-in-one he shot. Special thanks to the nurses and staff at Northern Illinois Hospice for their care and kindness.
Survived by his children, Linda Carlson, Laurie (Gregory) Philpot, Chuck Powell, all of Rockford and Lisa (Dan) Smith of So. Beloit; his grandchildren, Kelli (Bob) Purvis, Carri (Mark) Tullier, Michael Philpot, Ryan (Amy) Philpot, Matthew (Gretchen) Philpot, Brandon and Austin Smith; 14 great-grandchildren. Predeceased by his wife Shirley and his parents.
