Brian Cleveland, 64, died in his home March 4, 2020.
Brian was the comeback kid when it came to the challenges his body threw at him. At 18 he proved wrong the doctors and even his minister at the time who said he would never walk again. Brian stood proud and strong for years beyond their “edicts”. Sadly, this time one more comeback wasn’t in the cards.
Brian lost the comfort of family at 8 years old when his mother died and an evil step mom took her place. It was his mom’s siblings George, Doris and Helen where he found the love and support he needed. He thanks his Uncle George for teaching him about character and integrity. and his aunt Helen who gave him his life’s purpose and passion by introducing him to the world of Shelties and the show ring.
Brian dedicated his life to breeding for quality over quantity, going on to produce many champions in the breed. He also was a judge and an active member in the ASSA (American Shetland Sheepdog Association) serving as a board member and in other capacities through the years.
The high points of his sheltie career included: judging Best of Show at the ASSA National Specialty in 2018, receiving an ASSA Life Membership for his work in the breed, seeing young people beginning in the ring and every time one of his dogs became a champion.
His 50+ years in the breed came full circle with a judging assignment on Saturday, February 29 for the Chicagoland Shetland Sheepdog Club where he began as a teen.
Of course, he had to work to support his avocation. He did so with dedication for over 30 years as a soldering technician at Woodward Governor. As much as he enjoyed his work, he also loved the friendships and social connections made there.
Brian is remembered for his integrity, his patience, his kindness and passion for everything sheltie.
Brian is survived by his beloved three bitches: Pamela, Shay and Sydney and innumerable Sheltie offspring bred and loved over the years. His dear friends aka family of choice: Marty and Jode Gabriel. He was also a proud “Dog Show Dad” to Stephanie, Grace and Nicole who gave him the joy of continuity in his life work. Thanks Mary Szczurek for your friendship and family support.
Brian is predeceased by his parents, Seymour and Bonnie; his uncle George and aunts Helen, Doris and Jean; and brother Brad.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to the American Shetland Sheepdog Association for an award in Brian's name. Arrangements by Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory, 3910 N. Rockton Ave, Rockford, IL 61103- Send online condolence at www.fitzgeraldfh.com.
