Beverly Sather Voorhees, 94, of Rockford passed away on October 18. She was born July 13, 1929, in Toledo, Oregon to Peggy and Carl Sather. She served in the Army and then in the Air Force where she met her husband, Leslie. They were married for 60 years until Les passed away in 2013. Beverly worked in various retail businesses for decades including serving as the Manager and buyer for Rings and Things/Trinket Tree at Cherryvale Mall. She and Les then co-owned V and P Hardware on Sandy Hollow Road in Rockford. She was a lifelong golfer, proud of always walking 18 holes in golf leagues at Sandy Hollow and Ingersoll Golf Courses. She also competed in various Rockford golf tournaments. She led an active life, water skiing until she was 75 years old and living independently in the home she and Les raised their family in until she was 93 years old. She volunteered hundreds of hours at OSF St. Anthony’s Hospital and played competitive bridge until a year ago, often earning master’s points. Her positive, can-do attitude was an inspiration to her beloved family and many friends. She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and at 92 years old, danced at her grandson’s wedding. Survivors include two children, Heidi Voorhees (Ed Walchak) of Chicago and Neil (Patricia) Voorhees of Houston, TX, four grandchildren, Cori Voorhees (Julia Fletcher), Cassandra Voorhees (Conway Karr), Annie Walchak (Youssef Shoukry) and David Walchak (Lucy Prather). Cherished great-grandchildren include Addison, A.J. and Rami.
Remembrances and celebrations of life will be private. Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital or any other charitable organization. Express online condolences at www.fitzgeraldfh.com
