LOVING WIFE, MOTHER, “NONNIE” AND FRIEND
Beverly “Bev” O’Brien Capone, 80, Rockford, passed away unexpectedly at home Thursday, September 29, 2016. She was born March 14, 1936, in Northfield, WI, the daughter of Clayton and Alice (Hanson) O’Brien. Bev was a graduate of Rockford East High School and attended the University of Illinois in Champaign and Rockford College, where she was a member of the synchronized swimming team at both universities. She married Joseph E. Capone at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Rockford on August 17, 1957. Bev was an active member of the Cathedral of St.Peter and was voted Woman of the Year in 2014. She had a great passion for the arts, nature, and education, and served as the Office Manager of the Mendelssohn Club for 22 years. She and Joe helped found the Edgewater Neighborhood Association and for the past 15 years was a passionate and integral volunteer for NAMI of Northern Illinois. She loved playing golf every Tuesday with the Ingersoll ladies - “18 holers.” She was a long time, avid bridge player. Bev was a kind, caring person who never met a stranger. She was a devoted wife and mother who dedicated her life to her family and those less fortunate. Her tremendous sense of humor and inquisitive nature were unique beyond words. She is truly one of a kind and her spirit will be glowing in every garden along your path. She loved spending time with her family.
Survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Joe; their children, Stephen Capone of Rockford, Christine (Kent) Davis of Rockford, Susan (Wayne) Seiter of McFarland, WI, Paula Capone of Rockford, and Andy (Sang) Capone of Rockford; her grandchildren, Lauren, Dylan, and Shane Seiter, Hannah Campbell, and Aidan and Colton Capone; her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Thomas (Karen) Capone of Casa Grande, AZ, Gary (Christine) Capone of Minnetonka, MN, and Gennaro “Jeep” (Kathie) Capone of Farmington, MN; her very large extended family including many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Predeceased by her parents and her brother-in-law, Jim Capone.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, October 4, 2016, at the Cathedral of St. Peter, 1243 N. Church St. Rockford, with the Very Reverend Steve St. Jules officiating. Burial in Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Monday, October 3, 2016, at Fitzgerald Funeral Home and Crematory, Riverside Chapel, 3910 N. Rockton Av, Rockford and again from 9:00AM until 9:45 AM on Tuesday at the church. Memorials to NAMI-Northern Illinois, Stepping Stones of Rockford, or to the family for a memorial to be determined.
