Bernard P. Hood, 84 of Loves Park went home to be with the Lord and his wife Carol on his birthday, January 20, 2010. Bernard was born in Clare, Iowa to Ireaneus and Hattie (Donnelly) Hood. He married Carol Ralph on July 11, 1953 in the Sacred Heart Church in Pocahontas, Iowa. Bernard worked for Ingersoll Milling for over 40 years as a pipefitter and a hydraulic engineer. He proudly served in the United States Navy and was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Ribbon with two stars for serving in Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He also served in the Marshall Islands. Bernard volunteered for the West Suburban Fire Department for over 25 years and took pride in his job and volunteer work. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, fishing, camping, boating, gambling, tinkering on the computer and sending lots of e-mails to his family and friends. He is survived by his children Chris (Roy) Wahlgren, Pat (special friend Peggy Bergmark) Hood, Kay Nelson, Jane (Steve) Shock and Jimmie Joe (Tammy) Hood. Grandchildren Jimmy (Laura) Salisbury, Jason Salisbury, Ross Wahlgren, Ashley Wahlgren, Jenny (fianca© Jason Hagen) Hudson, Bryan (Lindsey) Johnson, Alice (Tim) Boes, Adam (Esther) Shock, Sarah (Chad) Ahrens, Chad Desmond and Ryan Desmond. Great-grandchildren Morgan and Cole Salisbury, Drew Salisbury, Jordan Flowers, Tyler Mitchell, Dominick, Ariana and Cade Johnson, Maggie and Jack Boes and Easton and Eli Ahrens. Brother Bill (JoAnn) Hood; Yuma, AZ, several nieces, nephews and special nephew Marty (Carla) Bergstrom, sister-in-Laws Mary Jane Lavender, Zoe Shimer, Linda (Bill) Courter, Leone (Mark) Hoffman, Nancy (Jim) Kacmarynski and special friends Jerry Gill and Jim Johnson. Predeceased by his parents, wife Carol, brother Don Hood, son-in-law Rick Nelson, brother-in-laws Ben Lavender and Merlin Shimer. The family would like to give special thanks to OSF St. Anthony Medical Center and the nurses on 2 South for the care they provided to Bernard. Extra special thanks to Jackie, whom he wanted to "take home" . Funeral Service will be Saturday, January 23, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. in Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory, Mulford Chapel, 1860 S. Mulford Rd., Rockford, IL 61108. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until time of service Saturday in the funeral home. Burial in Calvary Cemetery.
