Arthur Bryn Carter

Arthur Archie Bryn Carter, 80, of Rockford, passed away Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at Nelson Debes following a long illness. Born April 21, 1929 in Rockford; son of Arthur G. and Sarah (Bryn) Carter. Graduated West High School in 1947 where he was instrumental in establishing the first high school boys baseball league in the Rockford Public Schools. Married Jeanne Nyquist on November 5, 1949. Art was a department manager at Quaker Oats for 40 years. After his retirement he was President of the Quaker Oats Quarter Century Club for 20 years. Arts love for baseball was fostered past high school by playing on various teams which led to personal invitations to try out for the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds. He spent many years coaching Master Shoes boys baseball teams, highlighted by being the manager of the 1963 Rockford Jr. Pony All-Star team that won the World Series. In addition to baseball, Art enjoyed golfing, bowling, fishing and he took pride in his immaculate lawn. Member of several organizations including Junior Achievement and the Retired Mens Group at the YMCA. He was Chairman of the Semi-Annual YMCAs Pancake Breakfast as well as their annual Christmas Tree sale for 20 years. Art was honored with a lifetime membership in the YMCAs Retired Mens club. He belonged to Alpine Lutheran church since 1953. Art loved his church and lived his strong faith through serving in many capacities including Church Council, ushering, Mens bible breakfast and numerous church committees, or whatever the church needed. Art was a devoted husband and a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Art truly loved life and always had a smile on his face and enjoyed being with people. Throughout his life, including his long illness, wherever Art was, people were happy to be around him. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Jeanne; son, Craig (Linda) Carter. Daughters, Cynthia (Scott) Lee and Cathy (David) Cyrs; grandchildren, Christy (Sean) Toole, Chad (Angel) Carter, Rachel (Jason) Biller, Mark (Tasha) Lee, Rebecca Lee, Genevieve, William, Thomas and Michael Cyrs; great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Noah and Sophie Toole, Joshua and Jacob Lee and Madeline Biller; sister, Nancy Lutzow; sisters-in-law, Betty Carter and Nan Carter; several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents, brothers, George and Howard Carter and sister, Shirley Untz. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00am Monday, June 22, 2009 at Alpine Lutheran Church, 5001 Forest View Ave. with Dr. Richard J. Meier officiating. Burial in Arlington Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 5-7pm Sunday, June 21 at Fitzgerald Funeral Home amp; Crematory, Mulford Chapel, 1860 S. Mulford Rd. Rockford, IL 61108 and from 10-11am Monday at the church.
