Anthony B. (Tony) D’Souza passed away at his home on March 6, 2023, after many years living with chronic illness. He was 77 years old.
Tony was born on August 14, 1945, in Kolkata, India, and spent his childhood and early adulthood in India. He was close with his large extended family living in Kolkata, Mumbai, and Goa, and was very proud to have met Mother Teresa on multiple occasions.
Tony attended R. G. Kar Medical College in Kolkata and then emigrated to Columbia, MO to complete a psychiatry residency. During his time at University of MO he met his lifelong partner, Barbara (Glauert) D’Souza. They were married in 1980 and within the next few years moved to Rockford, IL, where Tony began building his medical practice.
Over the next 35+ years, Tony earned the respect of colleagues, students, and patients due to his knowledge, expertise, and dedication to the field of mental health. Tony was a hard worker and always felt that providing for his family was his top priority.
Tony began playing the piano at a young age and always found great joy and satisfaction in making music. Whether rocking the jazz clubs of Kolkata, playing in ensembles with his daughter Arlene, or manning the pipe organ for religious services and ceremonies in MO and IL, Tony was often to be found sitting at a keyboard. He was also an avid sports fan and he and his son Anthony Edward spent every summer closely following the St. Louis Cardinals and every winter being repeatedly disappointed by the Chicago Bears.
Tony is preceded in death by his parents, Anthony and Irene D’Souza, and three siblings, Arthur, Austin, and Arlene D’Souza. He is survived by his wife Barbara D’Souza, children Arlene (D’Souza) Maurice and Anthony Edward D’Souza, grandchildren Ellen and David Maurice, and three siblings, Alfred and Alan D’Souza and Anita (D’Souza) Andersen.
Memorial services will be conducted at Westminster Presbyterian Church (2821 N. Bell School Rd, Rockford, IL) on Monday, March 13. A visitation will be held from 9:30am-11am, with a memorial service at 11am and lunch immediately following.
