Alphonso “Al” Cassaro, 95, of Rockford departed this world peacefully on Sunday, April 29, 2018 to be in the loving arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He was born on March 15, 1923 in Rockford. He married Betty Sartino on April 27, 1947.
Al was the owner/proprietor of 7th Street Drive-In-Liquors for 52 years and was involved with the 7th Street Business Men’s Association. Al enjoyed bowling and listening to his beloved Cardinals baseball games. Al served in World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart, as well as the bronze star for valor on the battlefield. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. He volunteered at St. Anne’s and attended Mass there every day. Al was known for his good-hearted nature and positive attitude and will be missed by all that knew him.
Survivors include his son, Chuck Cassaro; daughter, Barbara (Scott) Payne; grandchildren, Cameron and Connor Cassaro, Daniel Dammann, Angela (William) Gowan; several great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Nada Cassaro. Predeceased by his wife; Special thanks to caregivers Mary Sanders, Deb Hood and Heartland Hospice for their care and support.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 5, 2018 in Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory, Riverside Chapel, 3910 N. Rockton Ave. with Rev. William R. Wentink officiating. Visitation from 1:30 p.m. until time of the service. Burial in Calvary Cemetery.
