Allen W. Thompson, 92, Rockford, died at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 28, 2009 in his home. Born June 13, 1916 in Alton, son of Freeland and Elizabeth Lang Thompson. Married Florence Williamson in Lincoln on May 29, 1937. Employed by Barber Colman Corp. for over 25 years and was co-founder and co-owner of Applied Motors for many years. Member of St. James Catholic Church. Allen was the consummate community volunteer. Among the many organizations that benefitted from his talents and skills were OSF St. Anthony Medical Center, Winnebago County Coroners Office, Boy Scouts of America and St. James Catholic Church where he built many things that are being used there today. Among the many, many awards he received are the President of the United States Volunteer Service Award in 2002 and 2005, the National Volunteer Award from the Winnebago County Board in 2007, Recognition from the Governor for the Illinois Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service, the Senior Of The Year Award in 1994 and the Super Senior Award from Lifescapes. Survivors include his children Juliana (Jim) Jessup, Mundelein, Mary Beth Allen, Cherry Valley, David (Candace) Thompson, Rockford, IL; Ann (Mike) Domico, Wyoming, IL, Chris Thompson, Stillman Valley and Chuck Thompson, Tucson, AZ: Eighteen grandchildren, twenty-five great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Florence on March 12, 2001, grandson Nick, sister, Doris Quinn, brother George Thompson and two half- brothers. The family would like to extend their special gratitude to Wendy Slick-Davidson, Parish Nurse, for the exceptional loving care that she gave to Allen. Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 4, 2009 in St. James Catholic Church with Rev. Dean E. Russell, Rev. David E. Beauvais and Rev. William R. Wentink con-celebrating. Burial in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation from 9:00 a.m. until time of the Mass at the church on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to OSF St. Anthony Parish Nurse Program, 5666 E.
