Alice May Abels, 85, passed away on March 5, 2021. Born May 9, 1935 in Rockford, Illinois daughter to Manny and Ruby Bomgarden and married James Ables in Rockford on May 23, 1953. Alice worked at Dog n’ Suds for many years before moving to several local nursing homes as a dietary aid, and retired from Apostle Nursing Home early at the age of 62. She was active in local and state dietary associations, and held state officer positions. She and James enjoyed camping with friends and family, traveling, and square dancing all around the United States. She was an excellent cook and seamstress, she took pride in making her daughters clothes when she was young.
She will be survived by her daughter Joan (Fiancé Larry Griffin) McQuinn; special exchange students, Sophie, Ania, Gesa and Kam; her sister Donna Pixler and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband James and her parents. A special thank you to OSF Hospice and Pastor Jane Eesley at Christ United Methodist Church for the care and support they provided.
A visitation will take place on Thursday, March 11, 2021 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m at Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory, 1860 S. Mulford Road, Rockford, Illinois 61108.
