Albena Basile

Albena Stassi Basile, 95, Rockford, passed away Wednesday, November 26, 2014, at Presence St. Anne Center. She was born March 6, 1919, in Rockford, the daughter of Joseph and Josephine (Provenzano) Stassi. She married Samuel F. Basile, Sr. in Rockford on July 8, 1945. He passed away on December 13, 2009. Albena worked as a bookkeeper for Schrom’s Restaurant and then for Olson Pattern and Foundry. She was a past member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church where she was very active in the Altar and Rosary Society, volunteering in the school, and was Catholic Diocese Woman of the Year for the Parish in 2000. She is presently a member of the Cathedral of St. Peter. Albena was also active in the Winnebago County Home Extension for many years.
Survived by her daughter, Ninette Cooney of Rockford, Joanne (David) Gribbins of Torrance, CA, and Theresa (Steven) Powell of Dacula, GA; her son, Samuel (Louise) Basile, Jr. of Rockford; her grandchildren, Allison (Tony) DeFranze, Kate Gribbins, Melissa (Steven) Boggess, Chris (Amanda) Powell, Sarah Fitzgerald, David Powell, Emily Basile, and Patricia Basile; her great-grandchildren, Tony and Vincent DeFranze, Andrew, Austin, Doyle, and Trevor Boggess, Landon, Emma Kate, and Millie Powell; her brothers, Paul (Betty) Stassi and Albert Stassi; her sisters, Annette Gianesin and Therese (George) Linsky; numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her husband Samuel, her parents, her grandson, Daniel Cooney, her son-in-law, Charley Cooney, her sister, Josephine, her sister-in-law, Lucille Stassi, and her brother-in-law, Eno Gianesin.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, December 2, 2014, at the Cathedral of St. Peter, 1243 N. Church St. Rockford, with the Very Reverend Steve St. Jules officiating. Burial in Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M., Monday, December 1, 2014, at Fitzgerald Funeral Home and Crematory, Mulford Chapel, 1860 S. Mulford Rd. Rockford and on Tuesday from 9:00 A.M. until 9:45 A.M. at the church.
