Jo "Gioia" Varisco, 84, Rockford, passed away on Wednesday, November 21, 2012. She was born in Rockford on July 18, 1928, the daughter of Salvatore and Anna (Turiciano) Mera. Jo attended Rockford Public Schools and graduated from East High School class of 1946. She married Sal Varisco in 1951.Jo was proud of her Sicilian heritage. She was a charter member of the Amici Italiani Dance Troupe, and enjoyed preparing and serving Italian dishes. Jo taught cooking classes on various styles through Rock Valley College for more than 25 years.She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. She also volunteered and supported New American Theater with time and talent. Jo was certified in the Montessori Method of teaching and taught in both the classroom and private settings for many years. She frequently hosted foreign exchange students in her home.Jo is survived by her son, Tom (Leslie) Varisco; daughter, Sue Varisco; grandchildren, Jared Varisco, Kyle Adams, Shannon Folowell, and Dan Hughes; nieces, Ann Sword, Mary Starnes and Josephine Caiozzo; nephew, Sal Caiozzo. Predeceased by her parents; brothers, Al Mera and Pat Mera; sister, Mary Caiozzo; brotherinlaw, Vince Caiozzo ; sistersinlaw, Kay Mera and Josephine Mera; and nephew Joe Caiozzo.Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 28, 2012 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 4407 Highcrest Rd. Visitation will be from 4:00 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, 1860 S. Mulford Rd. and from 10:00 am until the time of Mass at the Church.
