Dominic Michael Iasparro

August 9, 1949 — July 30, 2023

Dominic Michael Iasparro, 73, of Rockford, was welcomed into eternity on July 30, 2023. Dominic was born on August 9, 1949 to Michael and Theresa (Pumilia) Iasparro. Dominic graduated from West High School in 1967 and bravely served his country in the United States Army National Guard for six years. Upon conclusion of his service, Dominic joined the Rockford Police Department; thus, embarking upon a thirty-five year career during which he rose through the ranks eventually serving as Interim Chief of Police and retiring as Deputy Chief of Operations.

Dominic married Pamela Suddarth, the love of his life, on February 8, 1975. Dominic and Pamela enjoyed a forty-eight year marriage filled with faith, respect, laughter and joy. Over the years, Dominic and Pamela welcomed two children, Michael and Cathleen, who would grow to endlessly make their parents proud.

After thirty-five years of dedicated service, the early morning hours, late-night calls, daily briefings, reading of thousands of reports, demanding press conferences and media interviews, important FBI partnerships, several well-deserved promotions and profound mentoring of all levels of officers looked like they would be coming to and end. However, Dominic’s amazing work ethic and passion for his profession led to his next position with the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department. He would hold the position of Deputy Chief of Detectives for the next eight years. While with the Sheriff’s Department, he would continue to share his amazing depth of knowledge to the benefit of all involved. With the change in departments, Dominic was able to offer his vast depth of knowledge and experience to a new organization of law enforcement professionals. Dominic’s ultimate goal was always to support his officers, deal fairly with the public and use his talents to make the city and county safer places in which to live.

Dominic officially retired from Winnebago County after eight years of service and a total of forty-three years in law enforcement. Not shockingly, Dominic’s preferred form of retirement relaxation was anything related to police work. He adored the viewing of a justice-centered movie or television series, reading of a crime-related news story, chatting about Rockford crime with son Michael and nephew Rich, and keeping in touch with many members of his beloved city and county police departments.

The happiest part of Dominic’s retirement was playing the role of “Papa” to his granddaughters, Sofia and Isabel. Papa and his girls shared special sleepovers, rides home from school, dreams for the future and uncountable numbers of hugs and kisses. To say that Sofia and Isabel were the light of his life is an understatement of epic proportion. Dominic’s boundless affection for his close circle of friends and infinite love for his family were obvious to anyone who was fortunate enough to have met him. Dominic’s humility, intellect, kindness, generosity and grace were as deep as the ocean and his loss as wide as the world. Dominic, because you will live in our hearts forever, you will never die.

Survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Pamela; his children, Michael (Jessica) Iasparro and Cathleen Iasparro; his grandchildren, Sofia and Isabel Iasparro and Kate, Patrick, Annie and Joey Sweeney; his sister, Theresa “Che Che” (Richard) Gambini; his sister-in-law, Kathy Hartman; nieces and nephews, Michelle Gambini, Rich (Lindsay) Gambini and Elizabeth (Ryan) Monahan, Stephanie and Jake Hartman; many great nieces and great nephews. Predeceased by his parents, his sister, Elizabeth Iasparro and his daughter-in-law, Michelle Iasparro.
